Paula Rego (b. 1935) is as famous in her adopted country, Britain, as in her native Portugal. In the words of Nicholas Serota, director of Tate, this major figure "has taken her own childhood experiences, memories, fantasies and fear, and given them universal significance." For Germaine Greer, whose 1995 portrait by Rego hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, her work is both feminist and subversive, projecting the private world and dreams of women with great depth and colour. This film follows Rego over a period of twelve months. In six interviews she talks with humour and candour about her private world, how it is woven into her pictures, how her work helps to keep her inner demons at bay.
